What is Transition Town New Cross?
Our mission is to mobilise and inspire local action to build a healthy community and environment
We’re a group of local volunteers with a common aim - to help the community come together, revive the local economy and share sustainable skills for a greener, fairer future. It’s about the community taking back some control, some pride, and having fun at the same time!
As a fairly new group this is a good time to get involved and help shape our direction.
What we’ve done so far:
- Held two free packed film screenings on the subjects of oil, climate change and local food networks, one held jointly with the New Cross Food Coop, a local group dedicated to making affordable healthy food available to people in New Cross (they deliver locally and have a weekly stall every Friday outside All Saints Church New Cross: call 0207 635 9000 for more info )
- Offered a free talk by Duncan Law of Transition Brixton connecting the ‘Age of Stupid’ film screening to the transition movement, followed by a community visioning exercise
- Put on Carbon Chronicles, the UK’s first climate change opera
- Run a free Upcyling workshop (how to make old bric a brac and clothes new again) and
- Gardening workshop in collaboration with Greenshoots, New Cross’ fabulous community garden on Besson Street
Current Projects
- Helping out with a brand new community garden and food growing project in New Cross
- Designing a mobile inter-faith and environment exhibition as part of our diversity project – we want to ensure we reach all communities in New Cross!
Potential workshops in 2011 include: draught-busting workshops/ cutting energy bills, permaculture/forest gardening workshops, cooking on a budget, curtain making, making musical instruments out of vegetables, bushcraft and foraging workshops. Check our website for details and join our forum: http://groups.google.com/group/ttnx
The Future -help shape it
As well as showing films and running workshops for the local community, there are a number of exciting projects we could potentially get off the ground, including:
- setting up new community food growing spaces
- planting edible mini orchards
- setting up an energy buying co-op
- building a wind turbine
- setting up a pop up shop in a disused space
…It’s really up to you and others like you. If you’re interested in the above, or have a better idea of your own, let us know. Come and be part of the adventure!
How do I join?
There are lots of ways of getting involved:
- Come along to the next meeting or social
- Comment on our forum
