We’re a group of local volunteers with a common aim – to help the community come together, revive the local economy and share sustainable skills for a greener, fairer future. There are many Transition Towns across the world and throughout the UK, with several others in London, such as Transition Town Peckham and  Transition Town Brixton.

Our mission is to mobilise and inspire local action to build a healthy community and environment

It’s about the community taking back some control, some pride, and having fun at the same time!

How do I join?

You can  join the list to get updates on local events and projects, or email: transitionnewcross@gmail.com, or come along to the next  social or monthly meeting. Our meetings are  run by consensus, and held the second wednesday of every month 7.30pm at Greenshoots Community Garden, Besson Street SE14 5AS.

Potential workshops in 2011  include: draught-busting workshops/ cutting energy bills, permaculture/forest gardening workshops, cooking on a budget, curtain making, making musical instruments out of vegetables, bushcraft and foraging workshops. The Future -help shape it

As well as showing films and running workshops for the local community,  there are a number of  exciting projects we could potentially get off the ground, including:

•  setting up new community food growing spaces
• planting edible mini orchards
• setting up an energy buying co-op
• building a wind turbine
• setting up a pop up shop in a disused space

Gardening workshop & film showing

Garden by day and kick back in the evening at Green Shoots Community Garden

Give a little back to Green Shoots, the great community garden and food growing initiative being run on Besson Street. If you haven’t already been there, this is your chance to help out vibrant community project, and get rewarded afterwards with a free showing of HOME, a film that s been reviewed as “a bold and important project … with stunning visuals”.

No need to book just turn up on the day. Bring food to share, and a willingness to get stuck in to the veg beds. Advice will be on hand if you’re not sure what to do.

Transition events

This event is part of a series of “make and do” workshops, which will aim to teach key skills for sustainability and fun.

At our last workshop, we learnt how to Upcycle our old clothes, bags and household junk into something new & beautiful! 

Other workshops lined up over the next few months include:

• Cycle maintenance
• Beer making
• “fruity beauty”, or how to make beauty products naturally
• Vegetable orchestra – learn how to make sweet music out of humble veg
• + more to be confirmed

Apologies for the recent lack of updates on this site – we have all been too busy running around organising our community opera, Carbon Chronicles, to get around to it.

We will be having a live performance at 8pm on Tuesday 20th July at The Montague Arms (“‘The best pub in the country”), so if you want to pop down and see us dressing up as elements and singing about oil please come down.

We’ll also have some more information about Transition Towns available on the night if you’d like to know more about us  and what we get up to, and have invited green guerrilla singer-songwriter The Carbon Town Cryer to come and play some brand new songs from his new album too. Thanks to all those who came to the social on Wednesday 28th April! It was great to hear about all the amazing things that are happening across the Lewisham area. Lots of ideas came out of this night, and Transition New Cross will be working over the next few months to try and help make some of it happen.

Things are gathering pace, with a definite core group of regular participants now, which is really exciting! However, there’s still plenty of scope left to get involved and we specifically need to get more people on board who have experience with putting on productions and who would perhaps like to try out as part of our chorus.

If you are interested in singing or acting in a community opera, the Carbon Chronicles project invites you to love your planet this Sunday by attending an informal first meet-up & mini rehearsal at All Saints Community Centre from 12am – 3pm.

Camilla, the brains behind the project, singing coach and piano player Extraordinaire, will be on hand to introduce some of the songs and there will be song sheets and music available.

Project info:

Carbon Chronicles, Britain’s only fully-fledged eco-opera, tells the story of elemental beings and their evolution into the mineral and fossil resources exploited by humans through the centuries, with the consequent planetary crisis and climate chaos. The ending, as in life, to be decided by all of us on the day of the final performance . . .

Carbon Chronicles is a participatory opera intended to provoke discussion and inspire action to reduce our dependency on a petroleum-based, exploitative global system, in order to live sustainably in a low-carbon society. The opera is written so that anyone at any age can take part, even without prior musical experience, and there will be regular rehearsals with professional performers to help you learn the parts.

With the help of funding from Artist Project Earth, a core group of musicians from Footloose community arts project have been touring the piece around Britain and Ireland over the past year, collaborating with the transition town network and other groups. Please get in touch if you would like to find out more and / or take part in our first meeting on 14th February (time and venue to be confirmed soon). We’re interested in singers (even if you think you can’t!), actors, dancers, set designers, costume designers and anyone else who thinks they might like to be involved.
