Key points from Community Outreach table from Food Group Launch on 21st June 2011
- Need a local Food Map ( to include New Cross and Telegraph Hill wards showing where main existing and potential food productions sites are, also potential/existing food distribution sites such as retailers)
- Need a leaflet incorporating this information and opening times of community gardens etc, could also include easy Recipes (for those not familiar with turning veg into main meal)
- Need for further networking events (regular seed swapping, farmers market)
- Spread the message “Fresh Healthy cheap food IS available! ” ( a leaflet could help do this)
- Food Tokens need to be valid exchange in local food and distribution centres (already taken by New Cross Food Coop) –because there is real food poverty in New Cross
- Cooking lessons (for those not familiar with cooking vegetables)
- Need for a community kitchen where cooking lessons could take place. (Potentially Oakhill nursery could be used?)
- Free Food/Picking days at community gardens – advertise these outside to bring people in
- Have ‘Open Gardens’ day (like ‘Open Studios’)
- Link food and health when outreaching to local BME groups
- When doing outreach to BME groups, be clear and honest about our aims and don’t overpromise
- Contact schools
